On this practical course you will create your own woodcut prints; exploring the materials, techniques, and illustration style of the medieval times and later.
Be inspired by the Museum’s exhibits, and view a selection of historical illustrations, or bring your own ideas to design, carve, and print your own woodblock, echoing the practice of the early printmakers.
Suitable for all abilities, with tuition on design, woodblock cutting and printing techniques.
Traditional Linocut Printmaking

Beginning with the Victorian invention of linoleum and its radical use as an art medium from Edwardian times onwards.
On this practical course you will create your own linocut prints, exploring the materials, techniques, and illustration styles from Edwardian times onwards. Be inspired by the museum exhibits from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, view a selection of historical prints or bring your own ideas to design, carve, and print your own lino block; echoing the practice of the pioneering linocut printmakers, who made the linocut print the new art sensation. Traditional linoleum will be used; made of natural materials including wood flour and linseed oil.

Create your own woodblock to print onto a selection silks, cottons, linen and 'stuffs' of the era.
Learn how the craft evolved from it's early beginnings in India, Medieval Europe, and through to the Victorian Arts & Crafts Movement in Britain.

Multiblock Printmaking

Multiblock printing revolutionized printmaking, allowing more colour and detail to be given to an image.
During this course you will create a ‘multiblock print’ consisting of two blocks carved from wood or traditional lino, which together form a layered image.
Learn how to design and cut firstly a ‘foreground’ or ‘key’ block and then create the complimentary ‘background’ block.
Learn the techniques of registering and transferring of a composition over the two blocks.
Tutoring also given on the suitable usage of colours and ink density for multiblock printing; with focus on the ‘layering’ effects of colours.
The course is suitable for those who have attended an introduction course in wood or lino printmaking, and wish to learn a further technique.

Taking the Museum as inspiration, learn to design an image and transfer it onto a woodblock, using wood cutting tools to carve the image, and practice mark making techniques.
You will then print your own woodblock to produce ten Christmas cards. Afterwards you can take your woodblock away with you so that you can print more at home.
Suitable for all abilities, with tuition on illustration, woodblock cutting and printing techniques.
